distribution within Europe

From Norway to Italy, and from Ireland to Romania (Fauna Europaea, 2007); Bulgaria (Buhr, 1941b), Slovenia (Maček, 1999a).

Untill about 1970 one believed that a single Agromyza species lived on Alder and Birch, which was called A. alnibetulae. Only then Spencer (1969a) noted that in fact two species were involved, A. alnibetulae living only on Birch, A. alnivora only on Alder.

Agromyza albitarsis Zetterstedt 1848, nec Meigen, 1830.

Hering (1957a) writes that very rarely “A. alnibetulae” occurs on Carpinus. Obviously, it cannot be decided whether this remark concerns alnibetulae or alnivora.

As explained above, references without hostplant information, published before 1970, are unreliable.
