Euleia heraclei: occupied mine on Levisticum officinale

Levisticum officinale, Amsterdam

gall

A large blotch, yellow or brown, preceded by a short corridor that in the end mostly is completely overrun. Generally several larvae share a mine. Especially in fresh mines the green primary and secondary feeding lines are well visible. Pupation outside the mine. Hering warns that the mines cannot be separated from those of the rare Cryptaciura rotundiventris.

hostplants

Apiaceae, broadly oligophagous

Aegopodium podagraria; Ammi; Angelica archangelica, sylvestris, ursina; Anthriscus sylvestris; Apium graveolens; Berula erecta; Bupleurum; Cicuta virosa; Conioselinum; Conium maculatum; Coriandrum sativum; Falcaria vulgaris; Helosciadium nodiflorum; Heracleum mantegazzianum, pubescens, sphondylium & subsp. elegans + sibiricum + transsilvanicum + verticillatum; Laserpitium; Levisticum officinale; Ligusticum mutellina, scoticum; Molopospermum peloponnesiacum; Oenanthe crocata; Pastinaca sativa; Petroselinum crispum; Peucedanum carvifolia, cervaria, ostruthium; Pimpinella major, saxifraga; Pleurospermum austriacum; Seseli libanotis; Sium latifolium, sisarum; Smyrnium olusatrum; Thapsia villosa; Torilis arvensis subsp. neglecta.

Mines have also been found on Eryngium, but there the larvae die prematurely. A reference to Ruta (Hering, 1957a) probably concerns xenophagy.
