Rabdophaga clavifex: gall on Salix cinerea

Not only the cluster of 4-12 densely hairy buds is characteristic, but also the distal swelling of the shoot. The full grown larva is orange coloured. They are solitary, one larva per bud. Univoltine, ibernation and pupation within the gall.

in the checklist by Gagné & Jaschhof, Rabdophaga repenticola Stelter, 1964 is treated as a synonym of clavifex; however,Skuhravá, Skuhravý & Carbonnelle (2017a), Skuhravá, Skuhravý & Meyer (2014a) consider repenticola an autonomous species; an argumentation is not given.
