The lower part of the stem weakly swollen. Between the leaf sheath and the culm here one or more white, 3-4 mm long, larvae or their puparia, each in an oval, shalllow depression of the culm.

The larva is described by Ertel (1975a).

In the literature it is often stated that plants with Mayetiola galls remain stunted. The experience of Sébastien while taking the picture above did not confirm this at all
