Coleophora pyrrhulipennella: case on Vaccinium vitis-idaea

case and feeding traces

Coleophora pyrrhulipennella case

from Toll (1962a)

Shining black bivalved sheath case of c. 9 mm long with a mouth angle of c. 20°, and a distinct ventral keel.

hostplants

Ericaceae, oligophagous

Calluna vulgaris; Erica australis, ciliaris, cinerea, manipuliflora, tetralix.

Very exceptional is an observation by Ben van As of two specimens on Vaccinium vitis-idaea (pictures above). On Erica arborea in the Mediterranean area lives the vicariating C. pulchripennella.

phenology

Larvae are full grown around mid-May (Emmet ea, 1996a).

BENELUX

BE recorded (Phegea, 2009).

NE recorded (Kuchlein & de Vos, 1999a; Microlepidoptera.nl, 2009).

LUX not recorded (Fauna Europaea, 2009).

distribution within Europe

From Fennoscandia to the Mediterranean, and from Ireland and Portugal to Romania and Crete (Fauna Europaea, 2009).
