Coleophora trochilella case on Artemisia vulgaris

Artemisia vulgaris, Castricum

mines, leaf underside

case

A straw-coloured, slender, three-valved case of he type “tubular silken case”; length about 10 mm, mouth angle 45° – 60°. Larve at the leaf underside. Perhaps because of the plant’s dense felt cover, the case is attached with much silk, giving the openings a conspicuous white margin.

hostplants

Asteraceae, narrowly oligophagous

Achillea millefolium; Artemisia absinthium, vulgaris; Carduus; Inula; Leucanthemum vulgare; Tanacetum corymbosum, vulgare.

Because in the past the interpretation of this species has long been uncertain, references of food plants from that time are unreliable. References to Hieracium need confirmation.

phenology

Cases from August till June of the following year.
