Very compact mine; a strongly contorted corridor in “intestine-like”, zigzagging loops; only the very last part of the corridor is free. Frass in the first and in the final part of the mine black, warm brown and coiled in the central section, and, except for the last section, occupying the entire width of the ocrridor. Fresh mines have a striking red brown colour. In the two mines that I know th mine was placed at the lower side in one, upper side, on a vein, in the second.
Ulmus minor, plotii.
Larvae in September (Emmet, 1983a); however, the picture above was made in mid-August.
BE Found in 2014 by Stéphane Claerebout; pictures above.
NE not recorded (Fauna Europaa, 2009); see also the note below.
LUX not recorded (Fauna Europaea, 2008).
distribution within Europe
Central and southern Europe, including the UK, but excluding the Iberian Peninsula (Fauna Eurpaea, 2008).
Bright green (Emmet, 1983a).
Strongly wound mines of Stigmella lemniscella can resemble deceivingly those of viscerella. Such mines for some time have led to the supposition that viscerella did occur in the Netherlands, until DNA-research disproved the identification. Corridors of viscerella start by making a number of zigzag loops; moreover the larvae are green, not yellow.
