The larva emerges through the micropyle (on top), and first crawls some distance over the leaf, before penetrating. The strongly curved youth case is is a \u201ccomposite leaf case\u201d, the adult case is a \u201ctubular leaf case\u201d. The adult case s trivalved, about 7 mm in length; the mouth angle is around 30\u00b0. References to Rosaceae often actually refer to <em>coracipennella<\/em> (see below).<\/p>\n<p>The larvae easily stray to other plants; this explains the reference by Buhr (1936a) of <em>serratela<\/em> as an occasional miner on <a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/ribes\"><em>Ribes<\/em><\/a>; also the reference by Sz\u0151cs (1977a) to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/geranium\">Geranium<\/a><\/em> must thus be explained.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"head-phenology\">phenology<\/h3>\n<p>Larvae start feeding in September and continue to the end of October. They hibernate in their case, and resume feeding in April. After some weeks they exchange their youth case for the definite one, and continue till early June (Emmet ao, 1996a).<\/p>\n<p>This time table is not without exceptions: the picture above of the young youth case by Jean-Yves Baugn\u00e9e was on April 24th, 2011.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"head-distribution\">BENELUX<\/h3>\n<p>BE recorded (Phegea, 2009).<\/p>\n<p>NE recorded (Kuchlein &#038; de Vos, 1999a; Microlepidoptera.nl, 2009); very common.<\/p>\n<p>LUX recorded (Fauna Europaea, 2009).<\/p>\n<p><br \/>\n<!--tekstblok--><\/p>\n<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"head-distribution\">distribution within Europe<\/h3>\n<p>Europe, except the Balkan Peninsula (Fauna Europaea, 2009).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"topic\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/coleophora-serratella-larva\/\">larva<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"head-synonym\">synonyms<\/h3>\n<p><em>Coleophora fuscedinella<\/em> Zeller, 1849.<\/p>\n<p>Where in older publications the names <em>fuscedinella<\/em> and <em>serratella<\/em> are both used, \u201c<em>serratella<\/em>\u201d can probably best be interpreted as <em>coracipennella<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"head-remark\">notes<\/h3>\n<p>It is impossible to distinguish the larvae or cases of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/coleophora-coracipennella\">C. coracipennella<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/coleophora-prunifoliae\/\">prunifoliae<\/a>, serratella<\/em>, and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/coleophora-spinella\/\">spinella<\/a><\/em>; only breeding, and to some extent the host plant, can lead to an identification. <em>Coleophora nigricella<\/em> (Stephens, 1834) formally is a synonym of <em>C. coracipennella<\/em>, but mostly the name is used, inadvertently, as a collective term for these four species.<\/p>\n<p>Coleophorid larvae are quite active, and on their way to a suitable pupation site can easily stray onto a plant where they would never feed. Such tramps easily occasion erroneous host plant associations.
