Contrary to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/phyllonorycter-leucographella\">Ph. leucographella<\/a><\/em>, with which this species shares some hostplants, the upper epidermis looks \u201cdirty\u201d by the presence of numerous fine black-brown specks of frass. The epidermis remains without folds until the mine becomes strongly contracted. Shortly after having started the epidermal mine, the young larva begins to make a second mine within it, in the palissade parenchyma. For a while the larve lives only, or mainly, in this inner mine. Only at a rather late stage it returns to the outer mine, and then consumes also the \u201croof\u201d of the inner mine. What remains of the inner mine is a black patch in the palissade parenchyma (van Frankenhuyzen, 1975a). This patch distinguishes the mine of <em>corylifoliella<\/em> from that of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/callisto-denticulella\">Callisto denticulella<\/a><\/em> (van Frankenhuyzen &#038; Freriks, 1975b).<\/p>\n<p>The mines strongly resembles those of <a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/phyllonorycter-leucographella\"><em>Ph. leucographella<\/em><\/a>, a species that only since 1991 belongs to the Dutch fauna (Stigter &#038; van Frankenhuyzen, 1991a). This species basically lives on Firethorn (<em>Pyracantha<\/em>), but some authors suppose that <em>leucographella<\/em> already has made the stepover to a large number of other Rosaceae genera (Huisman &#038; Koster, 2000a). This much is certain that <em>leucographella<\/em> forms mines on apple an hawthorn when firethorn is growing nearby. <em>Ph. leucographella<\/em> hibernates as larva (Stigter &#038; van Frankenhuyzen, 1991a, also own observation), while <em>corylifoliella<\/em> hibernates as pupa (Emmet, Watkinson &#038; Wilson, 1985a).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"beeld\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"centreer1\" src=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/beeld\/14193_im.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"371\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"en-bijschrift\"><em>Sorbus aucuparia<\/em>, Nieuwendam. The silvery epidermis, speckled with drops of frass, has largely been removed. Below it the damaged roof of the inner mine is visible (containing a very different type of frass). The larva in this mine was dead, and the roof of the inner mine was dry and brown.
