The mine is exceptionally large, 25 mm on average, and extends from midrib to leaf margin. The roof of the mine is largely eaten out but generally a green centre is left over. Often several mines in a leaf. The mine causes the leaf to contract strongly. The pupa hangs in the mine, suspended by a loose net of silk. Frass heaped in a corner of the mine.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"head-hostplant\">host plants<\/h3>\n<p>Fagaceae, monophagous<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"latinnames\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/quercus\">Quercus<\/a> pubescens, robur.<\/p>\n<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"head-phenology\">phenology<\/h3>\n<p>Larvae in July and September &#8211; October (Hering, 1957a). Only one generation in Britain, with larvae in July &#8211; August; whether they hibernate as larva or pupa is not known (Emmet, 1986d).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"head-distribution\">BENELUX<\/h3>\n<p>BE recorded (Phegea, 2009).<\/p>\n<p>NE not recorded (Fauna Europaea, 2009).<\/p>\n<p>LUX not recorded (Fauna Europaea, 2009).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"head-distribution\">distribution within Europe<\/h3>\n<p>From Germany to Portugal, Italy, and Hungary, and from Britain to South Russia (Fauna Europaea, 2009).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"head-pupa\">pupa<\/h3>\n<p>See Gregor &#038; Pato\u010dka (200a), Pato\u010dka &#038; Tur\u010d\u00e1ni (2005a). The pupa strongly resembles the one of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/phyllonorycter-harrisella\">Ph. harrisella<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"head-remark\">notes<\/h3>\n<p>Everywhere a rare species.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"head-synonym\">synonyms<\/h3>\n<p>Many authors consider <em>Ph. mannii<\/em> (Zeller, 1846) a synonym of <em>distentella<\/em>. <em>Ph. mannii<\/em> has the same range of hostplants as <em>distentella<\/em> (Global taxonomic database of Gracillariidae, 2009).
