Containing a curved beetle larva. <em>M. alcea, multiflora, neglecta, pusilla, subovata, sylvestris, trimestris: <a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/malvapion-malvae\/\">Malvapion malvae<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- couplet --><\/p>\n<div class=\"couplet\">\n<p><strong>3a<\/strong> Expanded malformations of leaves caused by animals =&gt; 5<\/p>\n<p><strong>3b<\/strong> Localised galls on stems or small pads bearing sori on all green organs =&gt; 4<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- couplet --><\/p>\n<div class=\"couplet\">\n<p><strong>4a<\/strong> Leaf blades, -stalks, axial parts of shoots, even calyx and green fruits with many small, rotund or oblong, yellowish, eventually red- to dark brown spores bearing bulges. <em>Malva spp.: <a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/puccinia-malvacearum\/\">Puccinia malvacearum<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>4b<\/strong> Plant \u00b1 atrophied; stem thickened, distorted; inner wall browned. <em>M. moschata<\/em>: Inducer unknown<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- couplet --><\/p>\n<div class=\"couplet\">\n<p><strong>5a<\/strong> Malformations with abnormal pubescence; caused by mites =&gt; 8<\/p>\n<p><strong>5b<\/strong> Malformations lacking abnormal pubescence; caused by aphids, scale insects or spittlebugs =&gt; 6<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- couplet --><\/p>\n<div class=\"couplet\">\n<p><strong>6a<\/strong> Malformations contain aphids  =&gt; 7<\/p>\n<p><strong>6b<\/strong> Shoot axis often with several oval to spindle-shaped swellings with centrally rimmed depressions which contain a flat froth-covered nymph. <em>M. thuringiaca: <a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/planchonia-arabidis\/\">Planchonia arabidis<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>6c<\/strong> eaves curled, deflected, nest-like; often deep green at infestation site. Infestation on erect young plants usually similarly involving several leaves. Containing a froth-covered nymph. <em>Malva spp.: <a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/philaenus-spumarius\/\">Philaenus spumarius<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- couplet --><\/p>\n<div class=\"couplet\">\n<p><strong>7a<\/strong> Leaf margin deflected or rolled downwards. Leaf blade variously curled to undulate, sometimes arched, umbrella-like. Infestation often on terminal leaves. Aphids green.<em> Malva spp.: <a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/aphis-umbrella\/\">Aphis umbrella<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>7b<\/strong> Similar, less conspicuous malformations caused by black aphids. <em>M. neglecta, sylvestris: <a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/aphis-fabae\/\">Aphis fabae<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>7c<\/strong> Leaf blade wrinkled. <em>M. neglecta, sylvestris, thuringiaca: <a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/aphis-althaeae\/\">Aphis althaeae<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>7d<\/strong> Leaf blade \u00b1 strongly wrinkled, margins deflected. Containing pale green aphids with siphunculi half as long as to equalling cauda. <em>M. neglecta, parviflora, pusilla, sylvestris, thuringiaca, trimestris: <a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/acyrthosiphon-malvae-malvae\/\">Acyrthosiphon malvae<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- couplet --><\/p>\n<div class=\"couplet\">\n<p><strong>8a<\/strong> Shoot tip stunted. Leaf blade variously disfigured and atrophied, \u00b1 thickened, rolled inwards, curled or undulate and excessively haired; often yellowing prematurely. <em>M. alcea, moschata, thuringiaca: <a href=\"https:\/\/bladmineerders.nl\/aceria-gymnoprocta\/\">Aceria gymnoprocta<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>8b<\/strong> Segments of older leaves \u00b1 converging and disfigured, bag-like; usually on leaf underside on the thickened veins with dense, yellowish, felt-like pubescence. Younger leaves, densely clustered at shoot tips, similarly but more severely disfigured, often haired on both sides.
