Agromyza nigripes Meigen, 1830
Broad gallery, generally beginning near the leaf margin or close to the leaf tip. Most of the times the mine remains at one side of the midrib. The mine is upper-surface, but has some full depth, translucent spots here and there. Frass in rather regularly scattered grains. Pupation outside the mine.
According to Dempewolf (2004a) only the male genitalia enable a reliable discrimination from A. albipennis and A. graminicola.
Glyceria and Holcus are the main host plants. Records of ‘Agropyron’, Alopecurus, Hordeum, Phalaris, Setaria are dubious; records of Phragmites refer to A. hendeli. The association with Brachypodium is described from Corsica (Griffiths, 1963a).
Larvae in June and late August-September (Griffiths, 1963a).
BE recorded (De Bruyn & von Tschirnhaus, 1991a).
NE The occurrence in the Netherlands has only recently (July, 2005) been ascertained by a find of a larva in the Bunderbos: the description by de Meijere (1925a) of the larva clearly refers to A. hendeli; only a casual reference to a larva from Holcus mollis in the same description could indicate nigripes. The inclusion of A. nigripes in the checklist of 1939 by itself does not mean much.
LUX not recorded (Fauna Europaea, 2007).
distribution within Europe
Black or dark brown; not unfrequently stuck to the leaf.
Agromyza agrosticola Hering, 1927; A. viridominalis Spencer, 1957; A. nigripes brachypodii Griffiths, 1963.
It is impossible to believe that the description of the larva by Beri (1971c), from Potentilla fulgens, really refers to A. nigripes.
