Amauromyza verbasci: mines on Scrophiularia nodosa

Scrophularia nodosa, Scrophularia nodosa, landgoed Tongeren © Hans Jonkman: unusual, failed mines (drought?)

Scrophularia nodosa; herbarium specimen, Bergen NH

Scrophularia nodosa, Diemen: very young mine

A short, mostly upper-surface, rarely partly lower-surface corridor leads to a large, upper-surface, primary blotch. The mine initially is pale, turns brown later. Frass in sizeable dispersed grains. Pupation outside the mine; the larva leaves the mine through a semicircular exit slit in the upper epidermis.

host plants

Scrophulariaceae, oligophagous

Buddleja davidii, globosa; Phygelius capensis; Scrophularia nodosa, umbrosa, vernalis; Verbascum banaticum, blattaria, collinum, densiflorum, eriophorum, nigrum, ramigera, speciosum, thapsus, vandasii.

Larvae in June-July and August-September (Hering, 1957a).

BE recorded (De Bruyn & von Tschirnhaus, 1991a).
NE recorded (de Meijere, 1925a, 1939a).
LUX recorded (Ellis, 2002, 2007: Kautenbach, Hobscheid).

distribution within Europe

From Scandinavia to the Iberian Peninsula, Sardinia, Italy and Serbia, and from Ireland to the Baltic States and Roumania (Fauna Europaea, 2007); Corsica (Buhr, 1941b).

Dizygomyza, Phytobia verbasci.

The occurrence on both Verbascum and Buddleja confirms the recent placement of the latter genus in the family Scrophulariaceae (see also Hering, 1962a).
