Chromatomyia lonicerae puparium

Lonicera periclymenum, Amsterdamsche Bosch, puparium in the mine

mine

The mine begins with a few lower-surface corridors, radiating from one centre that is not associated with the midrib; the corridors are very shallow and not easy to observe. Subsequently some (rarely only one) upper-surface, rather long and often branched corridors are formed from the same centre. Frass mostly at one side, in pearl chains. Pupation within the mine; the front spiracula of the puparium penetrate the plant epidermis.

host plants

Caprifoliaceae, oligophagous

Lonicera alpigena, caprifolium, nigra, periclymenum, tatarica, xylosteum; Symphoricarpos albus.

Observed by Yann Kerninon on Leycesteria formosa.

phenology

Larvae found from May to October, in several overlapping generations; common.

BENELUX

BE recorded (De Bruyn & von Tschirnhaus, 1991a).

NE recorded (Weyenberg, 1870a).

LUX recorded (Ellis: Kautenbach).

distribution within Europe

From Scandinavia to the Pyrenees and Italy, and from Ireland to Poland (Fauna Europaea, 2007); also Corsica (Buhr, 1941b).

synonyms

Phytomyza lonicerae; Phytomyza harlemensis Weyenbergh, 1870; Phytagromyza sonderupiana Rydén, 1958; Ph. soenderupiana (misspelling); Phytomyza xylostei (Kaltenbach, 1862). See Griffiths (1974a) or Spencer (1976a) for the complicated synonymy of this species.

parasitoids, predators

Chrysocharis pubicornis.

notes

Sasakawa (1961a) presents illustrations of larva and mine of this species from Japan, but the picture of the mine is so different that it seems doubtful whether the same species is involved.
