Plant Parasites of Europe

leafminers, galls and fungi

Liriomyza pusilla

Liriomyza pusilla (Meigen, 1830)

Bellis perennis, Nieuwendam

Solidago gigantea Germany (Baden-Württemberg): Baden-Weiler

Long, upper-surface corridor, winding through the leaf and frequently crossing itself; in small leaves often a secondary blotch in the end. Frass in short strings and pearl chains. Pupation outside the mine.

host plants

Asteraceae, oligophagous

Bellidiastrum michelii; Bellis perennis; Bidens; Callistephus chinensis; Crassocephalum; Epaltes; Hypochaeris; Solidago gigantea; Synedrella; Tithonia, Vernonia; Xanthium strumarium.

Daisy is the main host plant; records from Euphorbia probably refer to Liriomyza pascuum. Similarly, records from Hieracium will be due to confusion with L. hieracii and L. hieraciivora (Spencer, 1976a).

Larvae in May-June and August-September (Hering, 1957a).

BE recorded (De Bruyn & von Tschirnhaus, 1991a).

NE recorded (de Meijere, 1924a). Locally sometimes in large populations, but the number of localities remains limited.

LUX recorded (Ellis: Kautenbach).

distribution within Europe

Entire Europe (Fauna Europaea, 2008).

Liriomyza fasciola (Meigen, 1838); L. bellidis de Meijere, 1925.

Papp & Černý (2018a) noted a strong similarity, both in external morphology and genitalia, between L. eupatorii and L. pusilla, and on that argument sink eupatorii in synonymy of pusilla. Given the large dissimilarity in biology of the two species, and in the absence experimental confirmation or at least a study of the DNA, this synonymy is a rash and unjustified action.

parasitoids, predators

Chrysocharis viridis; Diglyphus isaea.

Also Beri (1971d) describes the larva, however, from an improbable hostplant: Clematis sp.
