Phytoliriomyza variegata (Meigen, 1830)

Colutea arobrescens, France, Paris, Versailles, Château de Versailles © Stéphane Claerebout: vacated mine; upper surface exit slit clearly visible

old mine
Astragalus glycyphyllos, Valkenburg (coll. JC Koster)
mine
The first instar larva makes a narrow upper-surface corridor along the leaf margin. After it has moulted it begins a large upper-surface blotch. Frass in conspicuous green lumps, that can “run out” irregularly. Pupation outside th mine.
hostplants
Fabaceae, oligophagous
Anthyllis vulneraria; Astragalus cicer, danicus, glycyphyllos; Cicer arietinum; Colutea arborescens; Coronilla vaginalis; Hippocrepis emerus subsp. emeroides; Lathyrus sylvestris, tuberosus; Oxytropis; Securigera varia varia.
Beiger (1960a) also mentions Vicia sepium, Drăghia (1971a) Gleditsia triacanthos. A reference to Lembotropis nigricans by Hartig (1939a) seems unlikely because of the taxonomic position of that plant.
phenology
Larvae from June to September (Hering, 1957a).
BENELUX
BE recorded (De Bruyn & von Tschirnhaus, 1991a).
NE recorded (Ellis & Koster, 2003a).
LUX not recorded (Fauna Europaea, 2008).

From Scandinavia to the Iberian Peninsla, the Alps, Serbia and Roumania; not known from the British Isles (Fauna Europaea, 2008); also Bulgaria (Beiger, 1980a) .
larva
Described by de Meijere (1925a) and Dempewolf (2001a); rear spiraculum with 3 papillae.
puparium
Yellow.

notes
The larva is also described by Beri (1971d), but from a very improbable hostplant, Leonitis nepaefolia (Lamiaceae).
