parasiet

The orange-red larvae paralyse aphids by an injection in the leg, then ingest their body fluids. A larva consumes 10-30 aphids in its life time, but in dense aphid colonies many more aphids are killed then consumed. Multivoltine, pupation in the soil.

larva

Aphidoletes aphidimyza: spatula

spatula with papillae (from Möhn, 1955a)

Aphidoletes aphidimyza: larva

anal segment (from Nijveldt, 1963a)

synonyms

Isobremia sonchi (Kieffer, 1913); Phaenobremia aphidisuga (Rübsaamen, 1891); Ph. aphidivora (Rübsaamen, 1891).

parasitoids, predators

Aphanogmus fulmeki.

notes

Widely applied in the biological pest control in greenhouses. See van Lenteren & Schettino about the bizarre reproductive behaviour of the species.
