The larva is white, jumping; usually three or four in a catkin. Locally, the green catkin scales are turned brown of black at their base. Univoltine; full grown larvae hibernate in the soil.

Only by inspecting the catkins for the presence of larvae or mites this gall can be distinguished from the one of Phyllocoptruta coryli.
