gall

larvae in the folds of a crumpled leaf. Larva initially yellow, later orange red, gregarious. Because the external digestion of the leaf tissue continues after the larvae have left, the galled part of the leaf turns brown and dies. One generation per year. Hibernation in the soil.

host plants

Betulaceae, monophagous

Alnus glutinosa, incana, x pubescens (= glutinosa x incana), viridis.

synonyms

Dasineura, Perrisia, alni (Löw, 1877).

notes

Mainly on suckers.

The colour of the larvae is important. If they are yellow, with anterior and posterior end red, Jaapiella clethrophila is involved.

inquilines

Several authors believe that that clethrophila could be in inquiline of tortilis, rather than being an autonomous gall causer. And a third species, Macrolabis alnicola, is cited by him as an inquiline of either of these two.

parasitoids, predators

Omphale lugens.
