Not only the cluster of 4-12 densely hairy buds is characteristic, but also the distal swelling of the shoot. The full grown larva is orange coloured. They are solitary, one reddish larva per bud. Univoltine, hibernation and pupation within the gall, in a cocoon.

larva and pupa
the mature larva is described by Kieffer and Nijveldt & Yukawa. The spatula is almost without a stalk, crescent-shaped and weakly sclerotised. The pupa is without a tooth next to the prothoracic horn.
