Wachtliella caricis: galls on Carex spicata

Carex spicata, België, prov. Luxeumburg, Marloie © Jean-Yves Baugnée

gall

larva solitary, orange; pupation in a white cocoon in the gall; univoltine.

hostplants

Cyperaceae, broadly monophagous

Carex brizoides, caryophyllea, disticha, divulsa, humilis, macrosolen, muricata & subsp. pairae, pendula, riparia, spicata, umnbrosa, vulpina.

synonyms

Wachtliella riparia (Winnertz, 1853); Perrrisia muricatae (Meade, 1886).

Cintractia carbonaria (Sowerby) Ciferri, 1931 has been described as a fungus parasitising the utriculi of Carex micheliana [= flacca]. However, according to Vánky the original description shows that some gall midge is involved. Conceivably, this could be W. caricis.
