Coccidae

soft scales

Coccidae often resemble Diaspididae, but the dorsal shield of the female in Coccidae forms an integral part of her dorsum. The shield may be smooth, but may also be filamentous or powdery. Some species make a large ovisac out of wax threads, mostly behind the female, sometimes ± below her body, and sometimes just covering it. The definite character of this family is the possession of a pair of triangular anal plates.
