larva within the mine
Transparant blotch, quickly turning brown, starting at the leaf margin. Frass in scattered grains. Pupation outside the mine.
Salicaceae, narrowly monophagous
Populus x canadensis, nigra.
The reference by Taeger ao (1998a) and Chevin (1998a) of Populus albaand tremulaas hostplants is rejected by Altenhofer (1980a, b) and Liston (1993b), who suppose a confusion with Fenusella glaucopis . However, in Altenhofer (2003a) again, next to nigra, alba and tremula are mentiond as hosts. Liston & Späth (2004a) consider only records from P. nigra trustworthy.
In the literature before 1949 also Acer campestre and platanoides are mentioned. This stems from confusion with Hinatara recta (CG Thomson, 1871).
Minerende larvae around middle May (Altenhofer, 1980b; van Frankenhuyzen, 1974a); hibernation as prepupa in the ground (Güclü & Özbek, 1999a).
BE recorded (Fauna Europaea, 2008).
NE recorded (van Ooststroom, 1976a).
LUX recorded (Chevin, Ellis & Schneider, 2011a).
distribution within Europe
From Denmark to the Pyrenees and Italy, and from Ireland to Bulgaria (Georgiev, 2006a; Fauna Europaea, 2008).
Messa hortulana; Fenusella soenderupi, Hering, 1935.
Van Frankenhuyzen (1974a) describes a case of mass occurrence and damage to a windbreak around an orchard in the province of Zeeland. Also from Turkey damage was reported (Güclü & Özbek, 1999a)
