A large, upper-surface (often nearly full depth) blotch, without a hint of a preceding corridor, beginning in the tip of a leaf segment. Often a well-defined first section of the mine is much shallower, green when lighted from behind. Frass in loose grains. Like in H. fiora the cocoon, that is formed in the mine, drops out of the leaf along with a circular section of the upper epidermis. Like in all Heterarthrus species the larva has thoracic feet that are reduced to triangular stumps.

host plants

Sapindaceae, narrowly monophagous

Acer campestre.

Tomov & Krusteva (2007a) also mention Acer platanoides; this must be mistake.

Larvae observed in early June.

BE Paul Fontaine found material that could be identified with certainty in Belgium in 2005 (Rochefort, prov. Namur); the year before I had found mines in Belvaux (Ardennes), but this material dated from mid July and consisted of vacated mines.

NE Found in 2005 in the Netherlands (Bergen/Limburg and Venray).

LUX niet waargenomen (Fauna Europaea, 2008).

distribution within Europe

From Denmark to Switzerland, and from Britain to the Ukraine (Fauna Europaea, 2008).

Heterarthrus healyi Altenhofer & Zombori, 1987 (see Dathe, Taeger & Blank, 2001a); an earlier statement by Liston (1995a) that contrariwise H. cuneifrons were a synonym of wuestneii has been rejected.
