Metallus lanceolatus: young larvae in Geum rivale

Geum rivale, UK Lincoln: young larve, in a number that probably is too large to enable all to survive; © Martin Gray

The mine begins with short, rather broad corridor, that often is overrun by the later, large, very transparent full depth blotch. The mine begins somewhere in the centre of the leaf. Frass in many loose grains. Larva pale, venter-upwards in the mine. Pupation external, exit slit in upper epidermis.

host plants

Rosaceae, monophagous

Geum coccineum, macrophyllum, rivale, x tirolense, urbanum.

Larvae found from June till November; probably two generations (Altenhofer & Pschorn-Walcher, 2003a).

BE recorded (Fauna Europaea, 2008).

NE recorded (Romeijn, 1993a); surprisingly, the species is not listed in van Ooststroom’s (1976a) checklist, although the species is not al all rare.

LUX recorded (Ellis: Kautenbach).
