The larva bores a 6-8 cm long gallery between bark and wood of old, free-standing trees. Pupation in the gallery, in a dense cocoon.

In central Europe the larva lives two, rarely one, year; in more northern Europe development takes three years. Th larva hibernates in its gallery, pupates there in spring.
