Elachista regificella Sircom, 1849

wood-rush dwarf

mine

Oviposition generally at the underside of the top half of the leaf. Between September and the end of February a very narrow mine is made, not longer than 3 cm, parallel to the midrib. The mine then suddenly widens to almost the full width of the leaf. The frass is concentrated in the transition area of the two mine types. In the broad part the epidermis is puckered, distorting the leas. Larvae can make a new mine, obviously without the initial part. Here the frass in concentrated around the entrance hole. The larva frequently vacates its mine to start a new one in another leaf. Pupation outside the mine.

notes

opmerkingen

The revision of the E. regificella species group by Kaila ao (2000a) demonstrated that under this name three species were covered: apart from the real regificella also geminatella and tengstromi. It appears that regificella lives only on Luzula sylvatica, geminatella on L. campestris and multiflora, and tengstromi on L. pilosa. If this is indeed the case, the report by Langohr (1975a) of having reared material from L. sylvatica in the Dutch province of Limburg would indicate that regificella does occur in the Netherlands.

Parenti & Varalda (1994a) mention also L. luzuloides as a hostplant of “regificella”; it is not clear to which of the three species this refers.
