Most of Europe; seems to be missing from the British Isles, the Mediterranean islands, and the Balkan Peninsula (Fauna Europaea, 2010).

Hering (1957a) briefly described the mine and larva, but (Traugott-Olsen & Nielsen, 1977a) suppose that this in fact was based on material of E. freyerella.
