On the basis of the key by Patočka & Turčáni (2005a) ainsliella stands next to B. frangutella and demaryella. The pupa of ainsliella differs from the one of B. ulmella, that also may live on American Oak, by having a transverse row of clearly coarser spinulation on abd 2-abd 7; in ulmella this occurs on abd 3-abd 7.
