Parornix devoniella (Stainton, 1850)
hazel slender

Corylus avellana, Amsterdam

Corylus avellana, Nieuwendam; mine and leaf fold
mine
Small, rectangular mine between two side veins (triangular when in a vein axil). The lower epidermis is brown. The larva begins feeding in the spongy parenchyma. Later also the palissade parenchyma along the outline of the mine is consumed. Finally all palissade parenchyma is eaten away, and the mine has become full depth and very transparant. Most frass in a corner of the mine. After leaving the mine the larve lives in a folded leaf margin.
host plants
Betulaceae, monophagous
Corylus avellana, colurna, maxima.
The switch from Betulaceae to Rosaceae has been made quite often. It is not surprising therefore that the species is found now and then on Cotoneaster.
phenology
Larvae in July and September (Emmet ao, 1985a).
BENELUX
BE recorded (Phegea, 2010).
NE recorded (Kuchlein & de Vos, 1999a; Microlepidoptera.nl, 2010).
LUX recorded (Fauna Europaea, 2010).
distribution within Europe
Europe, excluding the Balkan and the Mediterranean Islands (Corely ao, 2006a; Fauna Europaea, 2010).

synonyms
Ornix devoniella; Ornix, Parornix avellanella (Stainton, 1854); Parornix cotoneastri (Caradja, 1920).
notes
When the mine of Phyllonorycter coryli lies close to the leaf margin, it may deceivingly resemble the leaf fold of devoniella. In coryli the frass forms a compact clump, while in devoniella it takes the shape of long cigar. Moreover, the larva of devoniella bears four black spots on its pronotum.
