Phyllonorycter acerifoliella mine

Acer campestre, Cadzand, 3.x.2004; mine with pupa in cocoon, and frass accumulation in the opposite corner

mine

Relatively small, lower surface tentiform mine. The mine lies often under a leaf segment, and when the mine develops and contracts the segment usually folds down over the mine. The larve also feeds upon the palissade parenchyma of the roof of the mine, causing the upper surface of the leaf to appear damaged. Pupa blackish brown in a tight, thin-walled cocoon that is attached to the floor of the mine; all frass is accumulated in the opposite corner of the mine.

host plants

Sapindaceae, monophagous

Acer campestre, tataricum.

Szőcz (1981a) additionally mentions Acer platanoides and even the totally unrelated Viburnum opulus; this must concern cases of xenophagy. Also a record by Stammer of A. pseudoplatanus is dubious.

Larvae in July and October (Hering, 1957a).

BENELUX

BE recorded (Phegea, 2009).
