Phyllonorycter spinicolella mine

Prunus spinosa, Susteren, 21.viii.2003

Lower-surface, strongly inflated tentiform mine between to side veins. Lower epidermis with folds, green. Pupa in a white cocoon, frass in a mass in a corner of the mine. Before emergence the pupa works itself halfway out of the mine.

host plants

Rosaceae, monophagous

Prunus cerasifera, domestica & subsp. insititia, fruticans, padus, spinosa.

Sloe is the main host plant by far.

Larvae in July and September – April (Emmet, Watkinson & Wilson, 1985a). The lava hibernates in the mine, and pupates in the spring.

BE recorded (Phegea, 2009).

NE recorded (Kuchlein & de Vos, 1999a;, 2009).

LUX uncertain

distribution within Europe

Probably all of Europe, also Iberia (Laštůvka & Laštůvka, 2015a).

Lithocolletis spinicolella; Ph. pomonella: Gregor & Patočka (2001a).

Until the publication by Triberti (2007a) also Phylllonorycter cerasicolella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1855) was considered by many a synonym of spinicolella. The confusion that existed so long makes the interpretation of the older literature, and data on distribution and host plants, a quite difficult one.

parasitoids, predators

Pnigalio pectinicornis; Sympiesis acalle, sericeicornis

The cocoon sometimes is hardly recognisable, as the picture below shows. Probably this is a summer phenomenon, and are the cocoons of the second generation much less flimsy.

Prunus spinosa, Bemelen, late June
