The larva makes an extended gallery in the living bark of an old tree. Every few cm a pile of bright orange frass is expelled.

The pupa can be found in a somewhat larger pile of frass, in a white, double-walled cocoon. The inner wall being a rather open mesh, the outer wall finely woven.
