The larvae bore in the pith of a shoot, down to 7 cm from the tip. The needles turn yellow and drop in the course of the winter. Pupation in the gallery. Preference for low trees in shady situations.
Univoltine; adults in May – mid June.

The flat pupa bears on its head four thorns, that are used in ecdysis. Within the genus this is a unique character.
