Plant Parasites of Europe

leafminers, galls and fungi

Stigmella hybnerella

Stigmella hybnerella (Hübner, 1796)

greenish thorn pigmy

Stigmella hybnerella mine

Crataegus monogyna, Nieuwendam

Oviposition at random point of the leaf, either at upper- or lower-surface. First a quite slender corridor is made, with a relatively broad, continuous, frass line, that always leaves a clear margin at either side; the corridor winds freely through the leaf. This initial corridor abruptly, often with a change in direction, widens into a blotch that mostly lies along the leaf margin. Pupation outside the mine.

host plants

Rosaceae, oligophagous

Amelanchier ovalis; ? Cotoneaster; Crataegus laevigata, monogyna, pentagyna; ? Sorbus aria, torminalis.

In northern Europe Hawthorn is the only known host plant (Johansson eo, 19990a). References to Cotoneaster and Sorbus probalby all relate to Stigmella mespilicolella (van Nieukerken in litt., 2023).

Hering (1957a) mentions the species also from Pyracantha coccinea. Skala(1939a) and Szőcs (1977a) also refer to Hippophae; given the close taxonomic proximity of Elaeagnaceae and Rosaceae this is not improbable.

Larvae in end May – June and end July – September (Emmet, 1983a).

BE recorded (Phegea, 2009).

NE recorded (Kuchlein & de Vos, 1999a;, 2009).

LUX recorded (Ellis, Kautenbach, Dudelange).

distribution within Europe

Entire Europe (Fauna Europaea, 2009).

The larva is colourless, with a pale brown head (Emmet, 1983a; Johansson ea, 1990a). The pale brown head is an additional character to distinguish the species from Ectoedemia atricollis, which mine sometimes resembles the one of hybnerella.

Nepticula hybnerella; Stigmella ignobilella (Stainton, 1849).

Steuer (1995a) gives a picture of the mine, but incorrectly calls it S. perpygmaeella, while what he shows as hybnerella in reality is S. regiella.
