Stigmella salicis mine

Salix cinerea, Orvelte

Egg at the underside of the leaf, mostly close to a vein or the leaf margin. The mine, a corridor, is rather variable, mostly strongly contorted, sometimes even forming a secondary blotch, but at times only a little sinuous, running along a vein or following the leaf margin. The frass line is broad, especially in the first half of the mine.

host plants

Salicaceae, (almost) monophagous

Myrica gale; Salix alba, arbuscula, aurita, babylonica, caprea, cinerea & subsp. oleifolia, daphnoides, x fragilis, glabra, lanata, pentandra, purpurea, repens & subsp. rosmarinifolia, reticulata, retusa, silesiaca, triandra, viminalis.

Sallows (Salix aurita, caprea, cinerea, phylicifolia and their hybrids) are the most import hostplants by far. Mines on narrow-leaved willows are very difficult to distinguish from those of St. obliquella. Only occasionally the species occurs on Myrica (Myricaceae).

Larvae in June – June and again September – early-November (Emmet, 1983a).

BE recorded (Phegea, 2009).

NE recorded (Kuchlein & de Vos, 1999a;, 2009).

LUX recorded (Ellis: Kautenbach).

distribution within Europe

Europe, except the Balkan Peninsula (Fauna Europaea, 2009).

Nepticula salicis; N. uniformis von Heineman, 1871; N. dewitziella Sorhagen, 1885; Stigmella auritella (Skala, 1939); Nepticula arbusculae Klimesch, 1951. A DNA analysis has shown that the species actually consists of a complex, still unresolved (van Nieukerken ao, 2012a).
