Stigmella samiatella (Zeller, 1839)
Castanea sativa, Bergen op Zoom (egg at the underside, exit slit at upperside of the leaf)
Quercus robur, Naardensebos
Oviposition mostly at the leaf underside, almost always close to a thick vein. Mine a fairly long, rather slender corridor. Frass in a broad, often interrupted central band; locally it may be coiled.
Apart from basiguttella, St. samiatella is the only Stigmella that has been reared from Castanea (van Nieukerken & Johansson, 2003a).
In Sweden larvae were found in late June-mid July and mid September-mid October (Johansson e.a., 1990a).
BE recorded (van Nieukerken 2006b; Phegea, 2008).
NE recorded (Kuchlein & de Vos, 1999a; Microlepidoptera.nl, 2008).
LUX not recorded (Fauna Europaea, 2008).
distribution within Europe
Entire Europe, Ireland excepted (Fauna Europaea, 2008).
The mine is very variable, like the one of most other Stigmella‘s on Oak. Without larvae it is impossible to discriminate with certainty the mines of samiatella from those of roborella, ruficapitella and the much rarer atricapitella and svenssoni.
Contrary to Borkowksi (1972b), Johansson ao (1990a) write that the egg is deposited almost always on the upper surface. See also Kuchlein & de Vos (1999a).
