larva
mine
Very compact mine; a strongly contorted corridor in “intestine-like”, zigzagging loops; only the very last part of the corridor is free. Frass in the first and in the final part of the mine black, warm brown and coiled in the central section, and, except for the last section, occupying the entire width of the gallery. Fresh mines have a striking red brown colour. In the two mines that I know th mine was placed at the lower side in one, upper side, on a vein, in the second.

notes
Strongly wound mines of Stigmella lemniscella can resemble deceivingly those of viscerella. Such mines for some time have led to the supposition that viscerella did occur in the Netherlands, until DNA-research disproved the identification. Galleries of viscerella start by making a number of zigzag loops; moreover the larvae are green, not yellow.
