leaf segments disfigured, frayed. In early summer at the underside white (ultimately black) tufts of fungus. They constitute of two-celled basidia, on which one-celled, elliptic spores are formed.

Athyrium filix-femina; Cystopteris montana; Drypopteris filix-mas; Gymnocarpium; Phegopteris; Pteridium aquilinum.

Mainly on male-fern (Reimers).
