spermogonia subepidermal, weakly protruding, pale, 0.2 mm. Aecia amphigenous, also on petioles and scale leaves, 2 mm, bright yellow, without a peridium; spores densely pustulate.

At this stage impossible to distinguish from M. salicis-albae.
