no host plant alternation, no aecia. Spermogonia hypophyllous. Uredinia mainly hypophyllous. brown; spores pear-shaped, 19-21 x 32-39 µm, with generally 4, equatorial pores. Telia hypophyllous, dark brown, pulverulent; spores (1)2-celled, oval, 21-27 x 33-44 µm; wall reticulate; apically a distinct papilla; pedicel thick. The fungus is systemic and hibernates in the rhizome; that grow out in dense clumps of stiffly erect, etiolated shoots.
