No host plant alternation. Spermogonia not described. Aecia are not formed. Uredinia brown, long covered by the swollen epidermis; urediniospores 20-33 x 24-26 µm; 3 distributed pores. Telia as the uredinia, blackish brown, pulverulent. Teliospores 2-celled, pear-shaped, 24-33 x 34-51 µm; cell wall densely and finely verrucuose; pedicel hyaline, short.

Carlina corymbosa, libanotica, vulgaris.

Klenke &a Scholler also mention C. stricta [=> biebersteinii] which means an overlap with Puccinia carlinae.

synonyms

this species of often considered identical with, or a variety of, P. calcitrapae.
