no host plant alternation, only hypophyllous telia. The fungus is systemic. The telia consist of a dark brown centre where hibernating spores are formed, surrounded by a lighter zone where spores are formed that germinate immediately. The hibernating spores have a comparatively thick, brown wall and deciduous pedicel; the soon hibernating spores have a thinner, yellowish to hyaline wall and a more persistent pedicel.
