uredinia hypophyllous, pustulate, subepidermal; the discoloured epidermis eventually ruptures, creating a central pore; urediniospores club-like, finely practically smooth, on a short stalk. Telia hypophyllous on brown zones on overwintered fronds; teliospores intracellar in epidermis cells, consisting of 1-30 cells.
