the entire inflorescence and the upper part of the culm, together some 2-9 cm long, is transformed into a blackish brown granular-powdery mass of spore balls and filiform shreds. At first the mass is still covered by a whitish fungal membrane, and also partly enclosed by the leaf sheaths.
