The fungus causes perennial lesions, cankers, in the bark of the stem and branches. The resulting interruption of the sap stream causes the death of the distal parts of the tree.

notes
THe fungus penetrates tte tree via wounds caused by broken branches or fire damage, but also the galls of Dryocosmus kuriphilus have been shown to form a port of entry for fungus.
