Infected parts of the leaf venation are galled, swollen, and deep red in colour; adjacent zone of the leaf disk has turned yellow. In the veins, around the vascular bundles, ascogenous cells are formed.

Brandenburger considers several Protomyces species, kriegerianus included, synonyms of P. pachydermus. MycoBank (2022) considers kriegerianus a synonym of Protomyces kreuthensis.Here, Klenke & Scholler and the Index Fungorum (2022) are followed, where krigerianus remains as an independent species.
