Melampsora pinitorqua Rostrup, 1889
on Pinus
gall
Spermogia and aecia on the bark of first year shoots. Spermogonia minute, up to ± 0.1 mm. Aecia as up to 2 cm long orange-yellow cushions without a peridium, that rupture and release a mass of spores. Growth of the shoot is disturbed at the side of the shoot where the aecia develop, which causes a contorted growth.
spermogonia, aecia
Pinaceae, monophagous
Pinus brutia, halepenis, mugo, nigra & subsp. laricio, pinea, pinaster, sylvestris.
Not on species with needles in bundles of 5.
on Populus
gall
uredinia hypophyllous, on leaf spots that are mainly developed at the upperside, 0.5 mm, yellow, pulvinate. Throughout the uredinium stand paraphyses on a thin stem that rather gradually widens into a club-like head with uniformly thickened wall. Urediniospores oval, with spines all over; wall unequally thickened, the contents therefore look like a dumb-bell. Telia 0.5 mm, often in groups, brown, subepidermal; teliospores columnar.
uredinia, telia
Salicaceae, narrowly monophagous
Populus alba, x canescens, tremula.
synonyms
Melampsora aecidioides, castellana, laricis-tremulae, magnusiana, pinitorqua, pulcherrima, and rostrupii form a complex of species, that collectively is addressed under the name M. populnea. They form strongly resembling uredinia and telia on Populus sectie Leuce (alba, x canescens, tremula), but aecia on widely divergent plant species. There is no consensus about the taxonomic status of the component species.
