Uredinia hypophyllous, yellowish, often covering the entire leaf; they are sub-epidermal, spores are liberated through a small pore; urediniospores pedicellate, hyaline, finely echinulate. Telia also hypophyllous, sub-epidermal, brown; teliospores ± globular, smooth, without pedicels.

in arctic North America host alteration occurs with Picea glauca; this has not been observed in the European Arctic.
