Cronartium ribicola

Cronartium ribicola Fischer, 1872

Extensive swellings of the branches with bright yellow pea-sized aecia. Often resin is dropping down the swelling.

spermogonia, aecia

Pinaceae, monophagous

Pinus aristata, cembra, flexilis, monticola, strobus.

Exclusively on species with 5 needles.

a single telium

Cronartium ribicola: uredinium (swction)

the teliospores germinate already in the telium: on each of four (three visible) short stalks, “sterigmata” after meiosis a spore is formed.

uredinia hypophyllous, 0.3 mm large yellow pustules, covered by a peridium with a round central pore; spores orange, 21-25 x 13-18 µm, spinulose. The teliospores are 1-celled, elliptic, 30-70 x 10-21 µm. They stick together, and are squeezed out as a waxy thread of up to 1-2 mm.
